Data Center Down! (High Availability & Disaster Recovery)

Data Center Down! (High Availability & Disaster Recovery) Video Clips. Duration : 1.32 Mins.

What happens when a data center comes crashing down... literally? You've never seen a data center go down like this before. See how we did it. Watch the Data Center Down: Behind the Scenes at youtu.be We put our high availability and disaster recovery technology to the ultimate test. We loaded a server rack with a multi-tier application stack including an Oracle database on Solaris and the application layer on Red Hat Enterprise Linux as primary data center. A disaster recovery site was set up on a second rack, our failover data center. The applications were clustered using Veritas Cluster Server. Veritas Replicator was set up to do data replication between the sites. And then the fun started, as we took our two "data centers" 18 stories up on a building in the heart of Silicon Valley and we dropped the primary rack off the roof. What happened when this data center went down? First, it made a really loud boom. And then it seamlessly failed over to a recovery site. Exactly what a business would need. Facebook's new energy efficient data center

Facebook's new energy efficient data center Tube. Duration : 15.18 Mins.

Cloud technologies power some of Internet's most well-known sites—Picasa, Gmail, Facebook and Zynga, just to name a few—and cloud companies are striving to make the computer processing behind these sites as energy efficient as possible. With that in mind, Facebook, Dell, HP, Rackspace, Skype, Zynga and others have teamed together to form the Open Compute Project to share best practices for making more energy efficient and economical data centers. To kick-start the project, Facebook unveiled its innovative new data center and contributed the specifications and designs to Open Compute. "Cloud companies are working hard to become more and more energy efficient...[and] this is a big step forward today in having computing be more and more green," explains Graham Weston, Chairman of Rackspace. A small team of Facebook engineers has been working on the project for two years. They custom designed the software, servers and data center from the ground up. One of the most significant features of the facility was that Facebook eliminated the centralized UPS system found in most data centers. "In a typical data center, you're taking utility voltage, you're transforming it, you're bringing it into the data center and you're distributing it to your servers," explains Tom Furlong, Director of Site Operations at Facebook. "There are some intermediary steps there with a UPS system and with energy transformations that occur that cost you money and energy—between about 11% and 17%. In our ...

Home Data Center - Quick Vid

Home Data Center - Quick Vid Video Clips. Duration : 5.07 Mins.

A quick little video tour of the home data center. I've moved about 30 miles from where I was and moving all of this was no easy task. Just glad to be up out of the basement. I've scaled down everything being used quite a bit as you can tell from none of the 1u Dells being powered on. I now use my DL380 G3 as my primary server, DHCP, DNS, RRAS, AD, File, virtual SAN server, storage, backup for remote clients, pretty much everything. The DL380 G2 is my first ESX 3.5 host, currently running four 6 VM's, the Dell PowerApp 220 being my second ESX 3.5 Host running 3 VM's, and a soon to be added HP DL360 G3 with 2x Dual core Xeon's and I will be giving it 8 GB Ram. Once the DL360 comes in it will be deployed as a new ESX host and all of my current VM's will be transferred to that host. meanwhile retiring my other two ESX host's. I plan to sell one of them, the Dell PowerApp 220, and keep the DL380 G2 as a spare ESX host should the other go down for any reason. Give me your Comments and Rate the Video!

Home Data Center Expansion Part 2

Home Data Center Expansion Part 2 Video Clips. Duration : 2.62 Mins.

In this video I've gotten half of the equipment in that I acquired. Included in this video are 2x 2U APC SmartUPS 1500's and an HP BL-E class blade chassis fully loaded with 20 HP BL10-e blades! For those that don't know what blades are here's a simple explanation: small for factor servers designed for high performance computing on a limited footprint. I still have 6U more of equipment to add. This is what happens when you start selling managed services to your customers. They demand, you must supply. Let me tell ya... it's been a beast setting everything up, but it's so worth it. Stay tuned for part three, then future videos showing services & etc.!

The Home Media Data Center Project

The Home Media Data Center Project Tube. Duration : 9.98 Mins.

This homebrew project is to create a datacenter-in-a-box for a fully redundant home data & media management system, using Windows Home Server and Vista to serve media via XBox 360 extenders to different rooms. The goal was to fit the hardware to run both systems in as small and aesthetically pleasing a form factor as possible- pretty pleased with the way this turned out, let me know what you think! Before embarking on this I did some pretty extensive experiments with virtualization- Home Server under Vista, Vista under Home Server etc... my conclusion was that both systems really need access to the raw hardware to perform best, which is why I settled on the two-motherboard solution. For next steps I'm looking at booting Vista from flash memory so as to free up a hard drive slot, and replacing the ATX power supplies with micro-ATX ones to free up more space. Suggestions welcome.
