What Are the Components of a Server?

Since most businesses use servers in a range of separate roles, it's a good idea to see just exactly what's inside. You will observation that server components are very similar to personal computer components. The major differences are the speed and the storehouse capacity of servers.

Motherboard. The motherboard of a server is similar to a Pc's motherboard. As in a Pc, the motherboard is what brings many of the other components together. Think of it as the body of the server. Most of the other components and electronic circuitry attach to the motherboard. Memory, a hard drive controller, input/output ports, and the chipset is all part of the server motherboard. Motherboards can also supply housing for components such graphic adapter and a network interface. Many of today's modern computers come with this circuitry built-in to the motherboard. When a motherboard fails, the principles itself will fail.

Server

Processor. The second major component is the processor or the central processing unit (Cpu). This component, oddly enough, processes the data that crosses straight through its componentry. Think of a processor as the brains of the server. It is the component that largely affects principles performance, though there are other components that conduce to its success.

Memory. This is the component that you should all the time have more than enough of. In fact, it was Bill Gate who famously said that you should only need 720kb of Ram (memory). We're into gigabytes now. Put a lot of money into memory because it will be money well spent.

Hard Drive. This is where you'll store everything. Again, you should get one that will suit your needs for years to come. Hard drive memory is cheap.

Video card. This is possibly the one component that is significantly separate from the Pc. Servers don't have much use for sophisticated graphics cards. Go generic on this item.

Network connections. Network adapters are often built into the motherboard. You will still need to understand this component for it is straight through the connections that the other Pc are able to connect. Otherwise, it's an high-priced box with a lot of fancy components and gadgetry inside.

Power supply This is mentioned (whereas wiring or soldering isn't) because you will be using significantly more power than you would ordinarily use with a Pc. The amount of hard drives that are housed inside the box will decide how large your power supply should be.

While rebuilding my equipment rack I decided it was time to do an update on my home theatre equipment. I'm using a server rack with the following equipment: Bryston 14B ST power amp, Emotiva XPA-5 power amp, Emotiva UMC-1 processor, Benchmark DAC-1, home theatre PC, Samsung BD-P1400 Bluray player, and two set top boxes for TV. My speakers are Genesis 400 for LR, Genesis 700 for C, Genesis IM8200 for LS/RS and an SVS 12 inch subwoofer. My projector is a JVC-HD1 with an OSScreen 100 inch fixed screen.

Home Data Center - Quick Vid

A quick little video tour of the home data center. I've moved about 30 miles from where I was and moving all of this was no easy task. Just glad to be up out of the basement. I've scaled down everything being used quite a bit as you can tell from none of the 1u Dells being powered on. I now use my DL380 G3 as my primary server, DHCP, DNS, RRAS, AD, File, virtual SAN server, storage, backup for remote clients, pretty much everything. The DL380 G2 is my first ESX 3.5 host, currently running four 6 VM's, the Dell PowerApp 220 being my second ESX 3.5 Host running 3 VM's, and a soon to be added HP DL360 G3 with 2x Dual core Xeon's and I will be giving it 8 GB Ram. Once the DL360 comes in it will be deployed as a new ESX host and all of my current VM's will be transferred to that host. meanwhile retiring my other two ESX host's. I plan to sell one of them, the Dell PowerApp 220, and keep the DL380 G2 as a spare ESX host should the other go down for any reason. Give me your Comments and Rate the Video!

Finally the V2 version. Hope it comes out ok this time. A bit of history and other extra info: I did have 5 x DL380 G4's and a DL360 G4 about 18 months ago in this cabinet but the noise, power usage and not being able to install esxi effectivley (for 64bit) consigned them to ebay. My internet conection via the Netgear wnr3500U for reference is 50mb cable with virginmedia (UK). I'm also using a Netgear wnr2000 v1 reconfigured as my access point. The vm host still has plenty of hd space and ram to install more vm's and am looking for a good (which means free :) ) appliance for sysloging - turnkeylinux are apparently working on something so will see what happens on that. Solaris 2.0 strong points include its networking capacities; Sun-Soft invented the Network File system. The first step in this direction is Sun's Distributed Objects Everywhere, which is built colse to Sun-Soft Tool Talk, which, in turn, is built upon Sun-Soft Distributed Object supervision Facility.

Tool Talk is Sun-Soft network-capable mechanism for exchanging services in the middle of applications. Rather than requiring one application to request services specifically from another, Tool Talk lets an application receive servicing messages by registering its message pattern with the Tool Talk server. Many separate applications may receive a particular message, through only one will respond. To users, the details of Tool Talk are invisible; they see a favorable drag-and-drop interface.
